What Is Barotrauma & Why Venting Matters

Barotrauma occurs when fish are brought up quickly from depth — the rapid pressure change causes gases in the swim bladder to expand. Visually: bloated belly, stomach protruding from the mouth, eyes bulging, fish floating at or near the surface and unable to descend. A fish in this condition cannot swim back to depth on its own and will die at the surface without intervention. Venting with a needle releases the expanded gas through the body wall and restores the fish’s ability to descend and survive. How to Use It

• Identify barotrauma — look for bloated belly, stomach protruding from the mouth, bulging eyes, or fish floating at the surface unable to descend
• Locate the insertion point — insert the needle into the body wall at a 45-degree angle, behind the pectoral fin, approximately 1–2 inches above the lateral line; avoid the stomach and organs
• Vent the gas — gentle pressure releases the expanded gas; you’ll hear or feel the gas escaping; the belly will deflate and the fish will regain buoyancy control
• Release immediately — return the fish to the water as quickly as possible; a properly vented fish will descend on its own; minimize time out of water throughout the process
