Faux Bucktail by Flymen Fishing Company is a tapered synthetic fly tying fiber designed to replicate the profile, taper, and in-water action of premium natural bucktail — with significant practical advantages over natural material in usable fiber quantity, consistency, durability, and ease of use. Why Tapered Fibers Produce Better Action

The single most important performance difference between Faux Bucktail and standard synthetic fibers is the taper. Standard synthetic fibers are uniform diameter from base to tip — the same thickness all the way through, which creates a consistent stiffness along the full length of the fiber. This means that when water pressure strikes the front of a fly on the retrieve, the energy transfers uniformly along the fiber rather than accelerating and amplifying toward the tip. A tapered fiber — like natural bucktail, or Faux Bucktail — works differently: the diameter decreases progressively toward the tip, reducing mass and stiffness at the end, which allows the energy transmitted from the front of the fly to accelerate toward the tip and produce a faster, more pronounced movement at the end of the fiber than a uniform fiber of the same length produces. The practical analogy: it is much easier to crack a whip — which tapers to a fine tip — than a length of rope of uniform diameter. This taper-driven action is why natural bucktail produces the swimming, breathing tail movement that has made Clouser Minnows, Deceivers, and bucktail jigs effective for over a century. Faux Bucktail replicates this taper geometry in a synthetic fiber that is longer, more consistent, and more durable than natural bucktail.

Tying Tips

Faux Bucktail is slippery, and thread can slip when wrapping — especially at the head. Three techniques that prevent this:

• Twisted thread rope — spin your bobbin multiple times while suspended to twist the thread into a tight rope; the twisted texture bites into the material and grips without slipping
• Super glue base — a drop of super glue (Loctite Gel works well) at the tie-in point before the first wrap gives the thread immediate grip
• Thread ball — tie a small thread ball 1/8" in front of the tie-in point; this creates a valley for the Faux Bucktail fibers to seat into and stops the thread from pushing forward on the first wraps

Note: Faux Bucktail fibers are solid, not hollow, so they do not flare on the hook shank the same way as natural hollow bucktail. Hollow-tying and reverse-tying techniques require modified technique — see Blane Chocklett’s instructional videos below for specific guidance. Use heavy-duty or serrated scissors designed for synthetic materials.
