The Fish-Skull Articulated Jig Shank by Flymen Fishing Company is a 60-degree, jig-style articulated shank designed specifically to produce true jig turnover in articulated fly patterns — a swimming behavior that standard articulated shanks and most competing jig-style shanks cannot achieve. The critical design feature is a slot positioned below the shank’s center of gravity, which is where the dumbbell eyes or other weighting component are tied in. Placing the weight below the center of gravity allows the weighted fly to roll correctly to the 60-degree jig angle on the pause between strips — the same physics that cause a lead-head jig to turn hook-point up when it sinks or rests. The Jig Turnover Problem — Why Shank Design Matters

A jig fly is only a jig fly if it actually jigs — if the fly rolls to a consistent, predictable angle on each pause and returns to that angle after each strip. The jig action that makes lead-head jigs effective in both conventional and fly fishing is not a retrieve action; it is a pause action. When a jig is stripped forward, it moves in a roughly straight line through the water column. When the retrieve pauses and tension releases, the lead head’s weight — which is positioned below the hook shank — causes the hook to roll upward and the body to ride at a nose-down, tail-up angle. This roll-and-tilt on the pause is the visual trigger that predatory fish respond to as an injured or disoriented baitfish losing its ability to maintain correct orientation. Most jig-style articulated shanks have a standard circular or flat shank cross-section with a dumbbell tie-in point positioned at or near the center of the shank axis.
