Where standard articulated shanks create permanent connections between fly sections that cannot be separated without destroying one or both sections, the Exchanger Shank’s rear connector allows tail and body sections to be swapped between flies at the vise or on the water, enabling a tier to build a modular library of interchangeable components rather than tying complete flies from scratch for each color or profile variation. 20mm length, 25 shanks per pack.

The Rear Connector — How It Works & Why It Matters

The Exchanger Shank’s rear connector is a specialized shank-to-shank attachment point at the back of the shank that creates a secure but releasable connection to any following shank or trailing hook section. Once an articulated fly body is tied on the front Exchanger Shank and a tail section is tied on a trailing shank or hook, the two sections connect through the rear connector and fish as a standard articulated fly. When the tier wants to change the tail color, profile, or material, the tail section disconnects from the rear connector without cutting thread, without damaging the front body section, and without requiring any re-tying of the front hook or body materials. The replacement tail section — pre-tied on its own shank or hook — connects in its place in seconds. The practical implications are significant: a tier who builds 10 front body sections and 20 tail sections in different colors and profiles has the equivalent of 200 fly combinations in the box without tying 200 complete flies. Tail sections that are destroyed or damaged by toothy fish are replaced without losing the front hook and body. Loop Eye

The Exchanger Shank uses a loop eye rather than a standard ring eye at the front of the shank. A loop eye is formed from a continuous wire loop that is part of the shank’s wire construction, which eliminates the weld or solder point at the base of a ring eye — the weakest structural point on most articulated shanks and the most common point of shank failure under load from large, hard-fighting fish.
