The dumbbell eyes are positioned on the underside of the hook shank rather than on top, which causes the fly to ride hook-point-up — reducing snags on the bottom while maintaining a jigging, darting action that triggers strikes from species that ambush baitfish from below. Why the Clouser Works — and Why Size Matters

The original Clouser Minnow was designed by Bob Clouser in the 1980s for smallmouth bass on Pennsylvania rivers and became one of the most widely used fly patterns in the world because the dumbbell eye design produces a jigging, darting swimming action that no other streamer replicates exactly. The underslung dumbbell eyes act as a keel that flips the hook point upward, allowing the fly to be fished along the bottom, through current, and over reef structure with minimal fouling. How to Fish It

• Strip Retrieve — Standard Clouser Technique — the classic Clouser retrieve; cast, let the fly sink to the desired depth, then strip with short, sharp pulls of the line with the non-casting hand while holding the rod tip low and pointed at the fly; the dumbbell eyes cause the fly to dart downward on each strip and rise slightly on the pause between strips; vary the strip length and speed based on the species and conditions — short, fast strips for finfish in clear water, longer and slower strips for deeper fish in current or stained water; the fly rides hook-point-up throughout the retrieve, which allows it to be bounced along the bottom over reef, gravel, and shell without constant fouling
