The Fish-Skull Salt Creature, designed by Mike Smith, is a flats baitfish fly built specifically for sight-fishing on sand, grass, and mixed-bottom saltwater flats. The Salt Creature is tied with the Fish-Skull Baitfish Head — which provides the weighted keel that orients the fly in the hook-up position at all times — and the Fish-Skull Living Eyes, which provide the close-range predatory trigger that bonefish, redfish, and permit key on when inspecting a fly at the final moment before the decision to eat. The #4 stainless steel hook is fitted with a weed guard that allows the fly to be cast onto and retrieved across grass, turtle grass, shell hash, and mixed-bottom structure without snagging. The Flats Fly Requirements — Why Design Matters

A flats fly operates in the most technically demanding fly fishing environment: the fly must land quietly enough not to spook fish that are already visible and close, sink quickly enough to reach the correct depth before the fish moves past, orient in the hook-up position every cast to prevent the single bottom-contact snag that ruins a presentation to a targeted fish, and survive repeated casts across shell, grass, and coral bottom without the hook point being blunted or the weed guard failing. The Salt Creature addresses each of these requirements directly. The Fish-Skull Baitfish Head’s weight sinks the fly quickly to the feeding depth of fish that are tailing or feeding on the flat. The Baitfish Head’s keel geometry orients the fly hook-up on every cast — no adjustment, no re-casting to correct orientation — which means every presentation to a sighted fish is a fishable presentation. The weed guard protects the hook point through grass and shell. The Living Eyes provide the final visual trigger at the range — typically 12–24 inches — at which a bonefish or redfish makes its eat decision.

Hook-Up Keel — Why It Matters on the Flats

The hook-up position — fly riding with the hook point facing up — is not a minor convenience on a saltwater flat; it is a functional requirement. Flats species feed head-down on or near the substrate. Bonefish root through sand and coral for crustaceans and baitfish; redfish tail vertically on shell and grass edges. A fly that lands hook-down on the bottom snags on the first twitch and cannot be retrieved naturally past a feeding fish. A fly that rides hook-up can be retrieved along the bottom — twitched across shell, dragged through grass, hopped across sand — throughout its entire path to the fish without a single snag interrupting the presentation. How to Fish It

• Sight-Fishing to Tailing Fish — lead the fish by 3–6 feet depending on speed and direction; allow the fly to sink to the fish’s feeding level; a single slow strip or twitch as the fish approaches moves the fly without alarming it; let the fish find the fly and eat; the hook-up orientation means the fly is in the correct position to be eaten from above, which is the natural feeding angle of a bottom-rooting flats fish
• Blind Casting to Structure — on grass and shell edges without a visible fish, cast along the structure edge and retrieve with short, irregular strips and pauses; the weed guard allows the fly to be worked directly through and across vegetation without snagging; pause on each strip to allow the fly to sink back toward the bottom in the hook-up position
