Why the Shrimp & Cray Tail Replaces Bead Chain & Dumbbells

Bead chain eyes and lead or tungsten dumbbells have been the standard weighting solution for shrimp and crayfish patterns since the Gotcha bonefish fly was developed in the 1970s. Both materials work well as weights and both produce a keel action that orients the fly correctly in the water, but both materials have the same fundamental limitation: they are general-purpose weighting components that happen to be re-purposed for crustacean imitations. A bead chain tied at the head of a Gotcha adds weight and keel, but it reads as two metal spheres tied to the front of a shrimp fly — not as the fanned, segmented tail of an escaping shrimp. The tying method is identical: tie the Shrimp & Cray Tail in the same position on the hook shank where you would tie a bead chain, using the same thread wrap technique, then continue tying the remainder of the pattern in the normal way. Keel Action & Fly Orientation

Like bead chain and dumbbells, the Shrimp & Cray Tail distributes most of its weight to the bottom of the fly (the tail hangs below the hook shank), creating a weighted keel that orients the fly correctly in the water column. Tying Instructions

1. Start the tying thread and lay a thread base on the hook shank near the eye.
2. Hold the Shrimp & Cray Tail in position underneath the hook shank, with the rear of the tail positioned forward of the hook eye (the tail must not extend past the eye of the hook, or it will not keel correctly).
3. Secure with firm, even thread wraps. No figure-8 or crossing wraps required — straight wraps over the tail body are sufficient.
4. Continue tying the remainder of the pattern as normal.
