The KIFF Leader Looper by Flymen Fishing Company is a super-tough silicone loop device that slides onto the reel seat of a fly rod and creates a T-piece pivot point for storing your leader between casts, between spots, and during transport. By looping the leader around the KIFF rather than running it back through the guides, the leader-to-fly-line connection stays outside the rod guides and away from the reel — which eliminates two of the most common and preventable gear failures in fly fishing: the leader connection jamming in a guide on a running fish, and the line wrapping around the reel during transport causing a snap at the rod tip. Why the KIFF Leader Looper Matters

When you’re between casts or moving between spots, standard practice is to reel in until the fly or the leader-fly-line connection is at or near the tip guide. The problem: the leader-to-fly-line connection (a loop-to-loop, Albright, or nail knot connection) is almost always larger in diameter than the guide rings, and if that connection gets pulled into a guide on the hookset of a fast-running fish — a permit, a bonefish, a tarpon — it jams, creating sudden pressure that can snap the leader, pull the fly, or in a worst case, break the rod tip. Reeling in far enough to bring the connection inside the tip guide also means the fly line is wrapping around the reel under tension, which can cause tangles and line management problems. The KIFF solves both by giving you a fixed point on the reel seat to loop the leader around — the leader-fly-line connection stays outside the tip guide, the fly hangs safely below the KIFF, and the line is under zero tension on the reel.
