The Double Barrel Design — Why It Produces Better Pops Than Standard Cup Poppers

Standard foam and cork poppers have a single front cup that catches water on the forward strip and throws a small splash and audible pop. The Double Barrel body improves on this with two specific design elements: a deep front cup that catches and compresses a larger volume of water than a shallow standard cup, producing a louder pop and a more forceful water displacement; and an extended top lip that acts as a ramp, throwing the displaced water upward and outward rather than directly forward, which produces a visible spray and splash that a fish can see and hear at a greater distance than a standard popper. The combination means you can produce the same pop volume with a shorter, less aggressive rod movement — reducing angler fatigue on a full day of topwater fishing and giving you more precise control over the fly’s position relative to the target.

EVA Closed-Cell Foam vs. Cork — Why It Matters

Traditional bass poppers are tied on cork bodies, which are rigid, relatively heavy, and porous. Cork absorbs water throughout the fishing session, gradually becoming heavier and harder to cast, and it loses buoyancy as it saturates — producing a half-sunken popper that sits low in the water and creates a muted, wet pop rather than a clean, surface-breaking pop. Cork bodies also chip and crack on contact with hard structure, rods, boat gunwales, and hook sets against the jaw of a large bass. EVA closed-cell foam is impervious to water absorption because the foam cells are sealed — the popper body that comes out of the box at the start of the morning is exactly as buoyant, light, and responsive as the same body at the end of an eight-hour session; the cup geometry is identical at the 100th pop as it was at the first. How to Fish It

• Cast to Structure — Dock Edges, Blow-Downs & Lily Pad Mats — cast the Camo Bass Bug to within a foot of hard cover and let it sit motionless for 3–5 seconds after landing; large bass holding in the shade of structure will often charge the fly during this initial pause before any retrieve movement begins; the longer the pause, the more committed the strike tends to be from fish that are holding rather than actively cruising
• Aggressive Pop — Warm Water & Active Fish — in water temperatures above 65°F and when fish are visibly active on the surface, use a sharp, 6–12 inch rod tip pop followed by a 2–3 second pause; the deep cup and extended top lip produce a loud, splashy pop with minimal effort; continue with a series of pops and pauses back to the rod tip; the noise and water displacement draw fish from a distance; vary the length of the pause between pops based on the fish’s response — if fish are following but not committing, extend the pause
• Subtle Twitch — Clear Water & Wary Fish — in clear water or post-frontal conditions when fish are less aggressive, use very short twitches that move the fly a few inches and create minimal splash; the fly ripples and disturbs the surface without the aggressive noise of a full pop; effective for bass that are in a neutral or negative feeding mood and will reject a loud, aggressive popper but respond to the subtle movement and surface disturbance of a twitched fly
• #2 vs. #6 — Size Selection — use #2 for large largemouth bass in open water and when targeting trophy fish on large lakes with heavy bass populations; the larger profile and louder pop is more effective at drawing fish from a distance in deeper water and open cove situations; use #6 for smallmouth bass, panfish, and largemouth bass in smaller water and tighter structure where a large popper’s splash would alarm fish rather than attract them
