The Surface Seducer Spratz Fly by Flymen Fishing Company is a solid foam, flat-face baitfish popper designed specifically to produce an aggressive, side-to-side cutting action when stripped — a walk-the-dog surface behavior that is fundamentally different from the straight forward pop-and-splash of a standard cup-face popper. The Spratz’s flat face cuts through the water surface at an angle on each strip, displacing water to the side and creating a zigzag surface disturbance that mimics a baitfish that is moving erratically, injured, or fleeing in a panicked, unpredictable path — the exact surface behavior that triggers aggressive, high-speed strikes from pelagic and nearshore gamefish. The holographic body is produced using high-resolution foil-on-foam printing technology for a colorful, highly reflective finish that fires in direct sunlight and in the choppy, bright surface conditions where mahi, stripers, false albacore, jacks, bluefish, and small tuna are typically targeted. Tied on a Kona hook across both sizes (2/0 and 5/0).

Flat-Face vs. Cup-Face — Why the Action Is Different

A standard cup-face popper has a concave front that catches water directly on the forward strip and throws it straight forward — producing a loud, audible pop and a forward-directed splash. This is an effective attractor action for bass and other species that respond to a stationary splash, but it moves the fly in a straight line with each strip. The Spratz’s flat face does not concave-catch the water — instead, the flat surface deflects the water laterally as the fly is stripped, causing the fly’s nose to cut to one side then the other with each consecutive strip. The result is a zigzag surface path rather than a straight retrieve line, and a side-splash water disturbance rather than a forward pop. This action pattern — commonly called a “walk-the-dog” surface retrieve in conventional fishing — is one of the most consistently effective surface triggers for fast-moving pelagic species because it mimics the erratic, panicked movement of a baitfish that is fleeing and has lost directional control. A mahi or false albacore that is hunting a school of baitfish on the surface will charge and strike an erratic, side-cutting surface target with far less hesitation than a fly moving in a straight line at consistent speed, because the erratic movement signals vulnerability — a baitfish that can be caught.

Holographic Foil-on-Foam Body

The Spratz body uses high-resolution foil-on-foam printing technology — the same technology used in the PopStar and Camo Bass Bug range — to apply a holographic, multi-spectrum reflective surface to the EVA foam body. In the open-ocean and nearshore environments where the Spratz is most effective, direct sunlight at low and medium angles creates intense, flashing light signals off the holographic surface that are visible to fish tracking surface activity from depth. The foil-on-foam construction is also lightweight, maintaining the fly’s buoyancy and action integrity throughout a full session, and durable enough to survive the violent, high-force strikes of the pelagic species it is designed to attract — mahi in particular are capable of completely destroying a painted or soft-finish fly body in a single strike.

How to Fish It

Pelagic Species (Mahi, False Albacore, Small Tuna) — Fast, Continuous Strip — cast to the edge of a bait school, a color change, or a surface feeding activity and retrieve with fast, consecutive strips with minimal pause; the Spratz’s side-cutting action is most pronounced at moderate-to-fast retrieve speeds; false albacore and small tuna in particular require a very fast retrieve — match the speed of the baitfish the predators are already chasing; slow down only if fish are visible but not committing, at which point a single pause can trigger the strike from a following fish
Striped Bass — Walk the Dog Retrieve — cast to a rip line, current seam, or surface activity and retrieve with a consistent strip-strip-pause cadence; the flat face produces the zigzag walk-the-dog path most effectively at a moderate, rhythmic retrieve speed; striped bass will follow a Spratz across the surface for considerable distance before committing — maintain the retrieve and do not slow down when you see a follow; most strikes occur when the following fish accelerates and the fly’s next side-cut brings it directly across the fish’s line of approach
Bluefish & Jacks — Aggressive Strip — bluefish and jacks are among the most aggressive surface feeders in their respective environments and will strike any moving surface target at considerable retrieve speeds; retrieve with long, fast strips and a short pause; the Spratz’s durability is an advantage with bluefish, which routinely destroy softer fly bodies on the first strike; set the hook with a firm strip-set as the fish closes
Mahi (Dolphinfish) — Live Bait School Presentation — when mahi are holding under a weed line or debris field, cast the Spratz to within a few feet of the structure and retrieve at moderate speed with the walk-the-dog action; mahi holding under floating debris are protecting their position and will charge aggressively at a surface fly that enters their field of vision; in open-water blitz situations, cast past the activity and retrieve through it at high speed to match the baitfish that are already fleeing at the surface

Size Selection Guide

2/0 — the smaller of the two sizes; most effective for false albacore, school bluefin, bonito, bluefish, jacks, and striped bass on bait schools of smaller silversides and sand eels; also appropriate for nearshore stripers in situations where a large fly profile would be too aggressive relative to the prevalent baitfish size
5/0 — the larger size; most effective for mahi in offshore and blue-water situations, large striped bass targeting large bunker, large bluefish, amberjack, and any situation where a bigger surface profile is needed to draw fish from a distance or match larger prevalent baitfish

Blue — matches blue-backed baitfish (mackerel, small bluefish, and juvenile tuna species); most effective in clear blue water and offshore conditions
