Setup and Casting

Check the rod’s printed line and lure ratings before choosing tackle. Include hooks, sinkers, bait, and trailers when checking the complete casting weight. Follow the reel’s capacity markings and instructions when spooling line.

Set the reel’s available casting controls according to its instructions. Begin with short, controlled casts in an open area. Keep your thumb lightly over the spool to manage its speed, then stop the spool as the lure lands. Increase distance gradually as you become comfortable.

Recheck your settings after changing lure weight or casting direction in the wind. If a backlash develops, clear the loose loops before making another cast rather than forcing the handle.

Adjust the drag to release below the breaking strength of your line and knots. During a fight, maintain steady pressure and use a landing net instead of lifting the fish with the rod.

Care and Storage

Wipe the rod and reel clean after use and let both dry before storage. Inspect the guides and line for damage, protect the rod tip during transport, and keep grit away from the reel. Avoid submerging the reel or using high-pressure spray. Follow Zebco’s instructions for lubrication and maintenance.
