The Engineering — Why It Works Under Pressure

Most quick-change jig head systems fail under fight pressure because the head is positioned around or in front of the line tie — when a fish rolls or pulls hard, the torque transfers to the head and unscrews or loosens it. The Screwy Head solves this with a specific geometry: the line tie (hook eye) is positioned behind the head. The head screws on in front of the line tie. Under fight pressure — including when a striper rolls, a flounder spins, or a snook makes a fast run — all force transfers directly to the hook, not to the head. The head physically cannot loosen under load because the direction of force is not acting on the screw-on connection. A precision rubber O-ring seats at the junction and creates a secondary lock that seals the connection against loosening from vibration and water pressure during the retrieve.

Sizes — When to Use Each Weight

• 0.5 oz — slow fall; shallow flats and grass edges in calm conditions; fish holding high in the water column
• 0.75 oz — light to moderate fall; versatile inshore option for 2–6 ft water with light current
• 1 oz — standard medium weight; widest range of conditions; moderate current, 4–10 ft, most inshore species
• 1.25 oz — heavier for faster current or deeper structure; keeps the bait down during the retrieve
• 1.5 oz — heaviest; deep water, strong current, vertical jigging, or bottom-contact presentations

How to Fish It

• Rigging — thread your soft plastic onto the Mustad 5/0 hook using the screw-lock collar to secure the bait without tearing; the screw-lock threads into the nose of the soft plastic and holds it straight on the hook shank; then screw the chosen head weight onto the hook in front of the line tie until the O-ring seats and locks; the head is now secured and will not loosen during the fight; to change weight, unscrew the head, swap to a different size, and re-lock in under 10 seconds without retying
• Slow Roll — Flounder, Weakfish, Speckled Trout — use 0.5–0.75 oz on shallow flats and grass edges; retrieve slowly just above the bottom, pausing every 3–4 cranks; flounder and weakfish track the swimming bait and strike on the pause when it settles; keep the rod tip at 10 o’clock and maintain light contact with the bottom to feel strikes; most flounder hits are a subtle thump or dead weight rather than an aggressive pull
• Swim & Burn — Striped Bass, Bluefish — use 1–1.5 oz over structure, through inlets, and along rips; cast uptide or upcurrent and let the head sink to depth before starting a medium-to-fast retrieve; the current will add action to the soft plastic as you swim it back; vary retrieve speed and add occasional rod rips to trigger reaction strikes from bass following the bait; heavier heads keep the bait in the strike zone in strong current without having to slow the retrieve
• Twitch-and-Pause — Snook, Tarpon — use 0.5–0.75 oz around dock edges, mangrove shorelines, and shallow pass structure; cast past the target and work the bait back with two sharp rod twitches followed by a 2–3 second pause; snook and tarpon in ambush positions key on the pause when the bait drops and stalls; the lighter head weight produces a slower, more natural fall on the pause that gives the fish time to commit
• Vertical Jig — Black Sea Bass, Snapper, Deep Structure — use 1.25–1.5 oz directly below the boat over reef and rock structure; drop to the bottom, lift the rod from 9 to 12 o’clock to swim the bait up off structure, then lower back on a controlled drop; sea bass and snapper key on the rising soft plastic and strike as it swims up; vary the lift speed — slower lifts often produce more strikes from sea bass than fast rips

Color Selection

• White — natural baitfish match; shad, mullet, silverside profiles; best in clear water
• Chartreuse — high-visibility; stained or murky water, low-light; maximum contrast against dark bottom
• Black — strong silhouette from below; clear water in bright midday or at night
• Pink — attractor; redfish, snook, weakfish, speckled trout; backup when white and chartreuse aren’t producing
• Olive Top — natural mullet and greenback profile; clear water over grass and sandy bottom
