Two Hooks for One Whole Crab

The Tide Rite R455 Blackfish SNAFU Rig is designed to fish a large whole crab with two hooks in the same bait. Hand-tied with SAMSU size 4/0 hooks, it offers a crab presentation for blackfish, also known as tautog, with additional applications for cod and sea bass.

Unlike a two-drop rig that carries separate baits, the SNAFU places a hook at each end of a short leader section. A centered dropper loop connects this hook section to your main bottom-fishing leader.

How to Fish It

Connect the SNAFU's centered loop to a compatible dropper loop on your main leader using a loop-to-loop connection. Position the hook section above the sinker connection on your bottom-fishing setup. Choose enough sinker weight to maintain bottom contact in the current.

Place both hooks in the same crab, spacing them across the bait while leaving the points and gaps clear. Lower the rig under control beside rocks, wreck edges, or other bottom structure. Keep slack to a minimum so you can feel bites, and avoid dragging the rig through crevices.

When a fish commits to the bait, reel down and make a controlled hookset. Check both hooks, the crab, and all leader connections after each retrieve or contact with structure.

Care

Rinse with fresh water after saltwater use and dry before storing. Replace the rig if the leader is abraded, a snell is damaged, or either hook is bent. Secure both hook points separately to keep the rig from tangling with other tackle.
