Whole-Mullet Rig for Striped Bass and Bluefish

The Tide Rite R855 Mullet Rig is built for presenting whole fresh or frozen mullet to striped bass and bluefish along the East Coast. It is a useful option during the fall mullet run, when these predators feed on migrating baitfish.

The pre-rigged wire leader carries a Mustad hook and an oval float that helps lift the bait off the bottom so it can move with the current. A three-way snap swivel provides connection points for your main line and weight.

Product Details

  • Model: R855.
  • Designed for whole fresh or frozen mullet.
  • Pre-rigged wire leader with Mustad hook.
  • Oval float helps hold the bait above the bottom.
  • Three-way snap swivel for connecting main line and weight.
  • Target species include striped bass and bluefish.

How to Fish It

Remove the hook from the rig before threading the metal bait shaft through the mullet's mouth and out through the anal vent. Reattach the hook securely, then slide the bait down toward it and place one hook point into the tail area, leaving the other point exposed.

Connect your main line and a suitable sinker to the three-way snap swivel. Use enough weight to hold the presentation in the current, and cast smoothly to avoid tearing the bait. Let the float help lift the mullet while the current moves it above the bottom.

Keep enough line tension to detect a pickup without constantly pulling the bait out of position. When a fish takes the bait, reel down to remove slack and use a controlled hookset. Check the bait and connections after each retrieve.

Care

Rinse the rig with fresh water after saltwater use and let it dry before storage. Inspect the wire for kinks or damage, check that the hook connection and snap are secure, and replace damaged components before fishing again.
