How to Fish It

Cast past a likely feeding lane or along the edge of shallow cover. Take up excess slack, then combine short rod-tip twitches with a slow, steady retrieve. Leave a little slack between twitches so the pencil can swing from side to side instead of pulling straight toward you.

Start with a consistent walking rhythm, then add pauses or change speed to see what draws a response. Work beside grass and oyster edges rather than through exposed cover where the trebles can snag. After a missed strike, pause briefly before restarting, and wait until you feel the fish's weight before applying pressure. Check the hooks and leader regularly, and rinse and dry the lure after saltwater use.
